Saugerties Timeline
1947

Grand Opening
Saugerties was opened in August by Robert and Sayde Shapiro as they were looking for opportunities to sell furniture after WWII
1971

Russel’s Vision
Russell came home after graduating from RIT and gaining experience at other furniture stores. As he takes over the company, he continues to build on the vision of selling better quality furniture by adding SEALY, La-Z-Boy, and other big brand names.
1984

Big remodeling
As the business continued to grow, Russel redesigns and modernizes the showroom to improve the shopping experience.
1996-2004

Jonathan Joins His Father
Jonathan Shapiro joined his father in ’96 to work part-time through college. In 2004 Jonathan (now the current owner) joins full-time to sell American-made furniture alongside his father.
2012

Introduction of Amish Furniture
Amish furniture is added to the store to avoid selling imports and continue offering customizable, quality products.
2025

Four Generations
Now, four generations of the Shapiro family have built onto the vision of Saugerties, finding joy in serving their customers and pursuing their interests in furniture.

More about the Shapiro’s
Meet Russell, Jonathan, and Isaac Shapiro: the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation American furniture enthusiasts who now carry Robert Shapiro’s memory and dream. While Isaac may not be actively involved in the store yet, he’s showing great interest and effort for the future of Saugerties, just like the rest of his family. Russell has served Saugerties well with over 50 years of furniture retailing. Jonathan, who has over 20 years of experience, owns the store and shows up every week to be available for his customers. Everyone on staff is held to a high standard of knowledge and trust, including our delivery manager, who has been like family, working hard with us for 25 years and counting.
“We sell better quality furniture: it lasts longer, meets your needs, and helps you enjoy your home to the fullest. Because we’re all family, we’re focused on making our customers happy.” – Jonathan Shapiro

Every piece of furniture we sell is built with quality materials and made to last.
